According to a recent USDA GAIN report, environmental restrictions and rising input costs in the EU are suppressing milk production in 27 European Union Member States (EU 27).
The increase in productivity is no longer able to compensate for the decline in the number of EU-27 dairy cows. As a result, EU-27 cow milk production, which has been on a downward trend since 2021, is estimated to decrease by 0.55% to 143.9 million tons in 2023 compared to the previous year.
While consumption continues to increase year by year, EU-27 cheese production is expected to reach 10.5 million tons in 2023. The mentioned production increase is expected to be realized by reducing the production of butter, low-fat and full-fat milk powder.
