Spain's dairy trade balance worsened in 2022

In recent years, Spain's dependence on milk and dairy products from abroad has been reduced. However, in 2022 the situation worsened and the balance was more negative than in previous periods, according to the latest report on the dairy sector released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). Last year, imports from Spain of milk and dairy products grew by 18.2% in volume, while exports decreased by 6.6% compared to 2021. Cream, cheese and butter were the products with the highest export volume. The destinations of these exports were mainly other EU Member States, such as France, Portugal or Italy, with emphasis on shipments to China outside the European Union. Regarding imports, the largest volumes correspond to cheese, powdered milk and butter, mainly from France, Germany, Holland, Portugal and Italy.
