Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W43 in the global nut landscape including almond, cashew, walnut, hazelnut, chestnut, macadamia. Spanish almond farmers suffered losses estimated at 30-50% due to spring frosts, drought and high temperatures. In China, there is low demand for Vietnamese cashew nuts hence the decrease in exports by 6.18% from January to June 2022. In Turkey, walnut planting areas are increasing day by day due to its taste and high nutritional value. At the Turkish Grain Board, shelled hazelnuts with a yield of 50 are purchased for 52 TL. A kilogram of Turkish chestnut collected after being dropped from trees in the forested areas is offered for sale in the neighborhood markets for 15-25 TL. Lastly, The Chinese in Linchang city in Yunnan has over 173,333 hectares of Macadamias farms, making it the largest Macadamia planting and processing base in the world.

Spain: Andalusian Almond Losses Between 30-50%

The Sectorial Council of Nuts of Agro-food Cooperatives of Andalusia warns that the multiple difficulties that are converging in this campaign put the sector in a very critical situation. The almond harvest this season is lower than last year's, with losses estimated at between 30 and 50%, due to spring frosts, the effects of drought and high temperatures hence prices going below those of the previous year. The main reason is "the absence of marketing operations, both for conventional and organic almonds," explains the president of the federation's Dry Fruit Sector Council, Antonio Hidalgo Ocaña.

Turkey: Abdurrahman Tutdere’s Response to Reduction of Import Tax on Almond

CHP Adıyaman Deputy Abdurrahman Tutdere at the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey criticized the reduction of the import tax on almonds to 2 percent. He said "Abandon your understanding of importers and your wrong practices that encourage imports; respect the efforts of the local almond producer, get your hands off their bread."

US: Low Demand From Buyers Is Putting Pressure on the US Almond Industry

At the SIAL-Paris food trade, almond buyers highlighted the challenges encountered, including demand concerns, the strong dollar, inflation and the Russia-Ukraine war. However, sellers are under more pressure due to increasing volumes from the new almond crop exacerbated by the 2021 crop carryovers that need to be sold. Almond prices in the food trade were USD 0.03–0.05 p/lb less than elsewhere, indicating that the US almond industry is under pressure. At these price levels, buyers are showing demand for a Q2-2023 shipment. Despite the pessimism surrounding the food trade, buyers do not anticipate any significant decline from present levels. Additionally, now is the time for Diwali, during which Indian demand will slow down as a result. However, a successful Diwali and India's present cargo position should result in significant demand moving forward.

Cashew

China: Vietnamese Cashew Nut Export Drops by 6.18% From January to June 2022

In China, Vietnam's cashew nut export decreased by 6.18% from January to June 2022 due to low demand. China is the biggest consumption market in Asia and shows a sharp decrease in demand. Walnut

Tridge Analysis: Bumper Harvest of Chinese Walnut Decrease Prices and Boost Exports in MY 2022/23

China is the world’s leading producer of walnut and USDA anticipates production to rise by 27% YoY to 1.4 million mt in MY 2022/23. This increase is due to the region of Xinjiang, China's largest producer of walnuts, recovering from a poor harvest caused by spring frost. The rise in production resulted in lower prices with an ample supply in the domestic market. Thus, will have a positive impact on China’s dynamic walnut export market in MY 2022/23.

Turkey: Harvested Walnuts Took Their Place on the Counters

In the Çameli district of Denizli, the planting areas are increasing day by day due to its taste and high nutritional value, and the harvesting process of walnuts, which has a very important place in terms of economy. The walnuts collected from the fields where the harvest work was completed began to take their place on the benches in the city. Çameli walnut, which finds a buyer as soon as it falls on the counter and is called "the taste that does not fit in its shell" among the people, has recently become a favorite of consumers. Producers, who are satisfied with the increasing demand, expressed that they are happy because the increasing demand is reflected in their earnings.

France: The First Trends for the 2022 Harvest

The walnut sector was launched in Loir-et-Cher about ten years ago , with the aim for farmers on the initiative to be able to diversify with a whole new crop. In this year 2022, the bet seems successful with harvests this year which are generally correct. "Regarding our Cuma, the harvest results are very positive with an average of 3 tonnes for the Fernor variety and 1,200 kg for the Franquette," says Damien Venot, President of Cuma des vergers, satisfied. The main trends for the 2022 harvest are as follows:

Rains at the end of the harvest: This year, “we had to ensure that the dryer was filled without stopping in order to save energy because the gas went from 10 to 50 cents. You have to be efficient to save money,” explains Damien Venot. However, the end of this year's harvest was somewhat hampered by rain.

The impact of climatic hazards: The high heat and drought of this campaign had no impact on the nuts. “In terms of health, this year has been excellent with good weather and heat which has prevented diseases from spreading” specifies Damien Venot. The harvest was not advanced because of this dry climate thanks to the irrigation which allowed the walnut trees to develop properly. “The hail affected a Cuma partner in early June with a 50% loss and much lower quality than expected. The worst is that there is no insurance to cover."

Upcoming projects: However, without taking hail into account, there was "overall a 30% increase in production, so it's relatively positive, but the average does not always mean everything because from one micro-region to another, especially with hail, it remains very heterogeneous”, explains Damien Venot. However, the associates of Cuma des vergers believe in the future of the nut industry given that a building is currently under construction and planned for spring 2023 to house a nut cleaning, drying and sorting station, concludes enthusiastic and optimistic Damien Venot.

Turkey: Searching for New Markets Around the World to Promote Agricultural Products

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has prepared a "Target Country Analysis Report in Foreign Trade of Agriculture, Food, and Forest Products" to promote Turkish agricultural products around the world. The report lists 35 products that can be exported in terms of production quantity and quality, which include olive oil, hazelnut, dried apricot, fig, raisin, cheese, flour, honey, seafood, poultry meat, chocolate, pasta, melon, quince, milk and dairy products, lemon, and pistachios. The top importers of these products are Russia, Iraq, Middle East countries, Germany, and EU countries that are geographically and culturally close to Turkey. The developing "Asia, Pacific" market for major Turkish products was highlighted as a key alternative market. At this point, China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Taiwan come to the fore. While Japan remains the most appealing and prestigious Far Eastern market due to its healthy and high-quality product demand, the American continent is also experiencing rapid growth in terms of both supply and demand.

Turkey: TMO Has Purchased 150 Thousand Tons of Hazelnut From the Manufacturer

Soil Products Office (TMO) continues the hazelnut purchases that it started in August. Atakan Akça, President of Altınordu Chamber of Agriculture, announced that TMO, which makes purchases at 48 points, has purchased approximately 150 thousand tons of hazelnuts from the producers in the last 2 months. TMO continues the hazelnut purchases that it started on 22 August. Manufacturers who want to give hazelnuts to the office first make an appointment with their documents through the system.

Turkey: TMO's Hazelnut Purchase Satisfies the Ordu Producers

In Ordu, the hazelnut prices, which are at the level of 43-44 liras in the free market, increase the interest of the producers in the Turkish Grain Board (TMO). TMO started the new season hazelnut purchase in Altınordu district on 22 August 2022. As of this date, the producers, who have made an appointment through the system, continue to bring their hazelnuts to the TMO purchasing point. The 50 yield hazelnut prices, which are at the level of 43-44 liras in the free market in the city, increase the demand of the producers for TMO.

Turkey: Hazelnut Orchards Are Getting Ready for the New Season

Preparations are being made before the new harvest season in the FINVER Project, which has attracted great interest from hazelnut producers since the day it started to be implemented and has achieved great success this season as well as last year. While an average of 50 to 70 kg of product was obtained per decare 2 years ago, Ordu Metropolitan Municipality teams started to work in order to produce hazelnuts of high quality and efficiency for the next season in the orchards, which started to produce 110 kg of product with FINVER.

Turkey: Hazelnut Price in 24 October 2022, Monday

Hazelnut prices, which had been fluctuating in previous years, are flat this season. In the free market in Ordu, 50 yielding shelled hazelnuts are traded at 44.5 TL. Chestnut

Turkey: Price of Chestnut Collected From Forests in Kastamonu Is 15 TL

The kilogram price of chestnut collected from forests in Kastamonu has decreased to 15 TL. Chestnut, which grows in the forests of Kastamonu's İnebolu district, is among the important livelihoods of the villagers. A kilogram of chestnut collected after being dropped from trees in forested areas is offered for sale in the neighborhood markets for 15-25 TL.

US: For Blight-Ridden Chestnut Trees, Rebirth May Be in the Offing

The American chestnut tree, once a regal pillar of forests across the eastern United States, is on life support, struggling to survive. Settlers along the US eastern seaboard relied on abundant chestnut trees to feed their families. Chestnuts made up about 50 percent of hardwood forests in much of the eastern seaboard, and the wood was ideal for building. But then came a terrible fungus, identified in 1904 at the Bronx Zoo on a tree from Japan. In less than three decades, millions of American chestnut trees had perished. It has been considered the greatest tragedy in the history of American forestry. Finding a way to fight the blight is precisely the mission of ACF. To do this, two main research avenues are under investigation. The first, which has been in place for years, consists of crossing an American chestnut tree with other species that already show some resistance to the fungus, such as the Chinese chestnut tree. The other one is to apply genetic modification.

Spain: Request for the Inclusion of the Vineyard, Chestnut, and Fig Trees in the Burning of Pruning Waste

UPA-UCE Extremadura has detected that in the Order that regulates the procedure for the granting of exceptional authorization for the burning of vegetable residues, strategic and emblematic productions of the region are excluded, such as the vineyard, the chestnut tree and the fig tree, which occupy thousands of hectares in Estremadura. This agrarian organization points out that these crops suffer from diseases and pests that can only be treated effectively through this measure.

Macadamia

China: Increase in Macadamia Production in 2022
