Portugal’s annual fruit production is currently estimated at 1.1 million tons -- mainly oranges, apples, and Rocha pears. Portugal has excellent conditions for the production of apples, producing over 350 thousand tons a year, representing just 2.5% of the EU production, and those grown here include Golden Delicious, Royal Gala, Red Delicious, Jonagold, Reineta, Fuji, Granny Smith and Pink. In Portugal apples are produced in various locations, but because apples prefer cooler autumns and winters, they are mostly cultivated north of Lisbon, mainly in the moutains area in the northeast of Portugal, more precisely in the municipalities of Armamar and Moimenta da Beira. To conclude, the idea of remarkable environmental conditions to produce fruits in Portugal was the basis for the most recent policies to this subsector, able to change and redirect the usual performance of an economic activity in rural areas.
Tridge has formed a partnership with the suppliers who modernized their orchards and improved agricultural practices (e.g., watering, fertilization, and the control of pests and diseases)with the goal of providing the best-quality apples worldwide.
