There are five coffee bean varieties that are produced in Vietnam today, they are Robusta, Arabica, Culi, Cherry, and Moka. The two main varieties for export are Robusta and Arabica.
Vietnam is the second-largest coffee exporter in the world and the leading country in Robusta coffee export. Four provinces that grow the most Robusta coffee are Daklak, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, and Dak Nong with an area of about 90% of the country's total coffee area - currently about 550,000 ha. Arabica coffee is grown in high-altitude provinces including Dien Bien, Son La, Quang Tri, Lam Dong, and Kon Tum. Arabica coffee varieties account for about 5% of the country's total coffee-growing area. Other varieties are about 5%.
Arabica tends to have a smoother, sweeter taste, with flavor notes of chocolate and sugar, they often also have hints of fruits or berries. Robusta, on the other hand, has a stronger, harsher, and more bitter taste, with grainy or rubbery overtones.
