Dragon fruit, also called pitaya, pitahaya, or strawberry pear is a plant in the family Cactaceae or cactus family, which in this family has more than 1500 species. The stems are green, succulent plants. No leaves due to reduced leaf shape. It grows on the Hylocereus cactus, whose flowers only open at night. The most widely available variety has white pulp with black seeds. Dragon fruit may look exotic, but its flavors are similar to other fruits. Its taste has been described as a sweeter combination of kiwi and pear.
