Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) is a mid-sized, fast-swimming fish in the tuna family that is found in tropical and warm waters. Its usual body length is about 1m. Skipjack tuna is an important commercial variety of tuna which is usually caught using purse seine nets and hook catch method. In India, these are caught around the southern coastal waters and are mostly land frozen. From India, these are mostly exported in frozen states. Apart from India, the other major producers of skipjack are Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Maldives, and Spain. They are used widely in Japanese and Indonesian cuisine. Skipjack tuna is smaller in size but tends to reproduce quickly and early and is most frequently used for canned tuna. Due to its high reproductivity, skipjack tuna stocks are the most stable around the globe.
