Kinnow mandarin is one of the biggest fruit crops harvested in Pakistan that has such high demand in both the local and international markets. Pakistani Kinnow is also known as ‘Pakistan specialty’ in the international market. This kinnow is easy to peel and the rind containing numerous oil glands comes off easily with bare hands since it is loosely bound compared to other types of citrus fruit. Therefore, the kinnow can be just peeled off and enjoyed anywhere, anytime. Moreover, Kinnow produced in Pakistan consists of several easily separated sections and high juice content. Its full-bodied flavor and its juice content combine to make a most satisfying and healthy fruit.
A majority of the country’s Kinnow production comes from the Sargodha region where the fruits are produced and processed. In Sargodha District, Bhalwal produces 650,000 metric tonnes of Kinnow annually and is considered as the center of Kinnow (mandarin) production. The best season for planting is from the middle of June (with the onset of monsoon) to the end of September. On attaining proper size, shape along with attractive color having TSS to an Acid ratio of 12:1, kinnow fruits are ready for harvest. Depending upon variety, fruits are generally ready for harvesting in December - January.
