Located between Europe and the Middle East, Turkey holds a unique position in the global onion market in being able to supply onions to various regions of the world, ranging from Europe all the way to the Asian markets. Turkey is the 6th biggest onion exporter in the world with an average annual export volume of 191 kmt.
The annual onion production yield in Turkey was 2,200 KMT in 2019, ranking 7th globally in the world onion production. Onion farmers in Turkey receive around 3.7 tons of products per 1,000 square meters, almost double the global average. The expected production yield for 2020 is announced as 2,350 KMT.
In Turkey, there are two harvest seasons for onions: winter and summer harvests.
From March to May, summer onions are harvested. These crops have few layers of peel, juicy and sweet in taste however they can not be stored for long periods therefore it is consumed between March and July.
From July until the end of September, winter onions are harvested. These are bitter in taste with a lot of layers of peel . These onions are durable and can be stored for extended periods of time (ranging from 3 months to 8 months depending on the particular variety) therefore it is sold and consumed between August and April.
