Oranges from Argentina

Argentina is one the largest citrus producers in the world today. Following just behind Brazil as a production leader in South America, Argentina's citrus industry manages to remain competitive in the world market. Within this citrus industry, orange comes 3rd in terms of production after lemon and tangerines but leads the market in domestic consumption given its cheap price and overall quality.

Production

Currently, Argentina is in charge of producing around 900,000 tons of oranges every year. However, half of the production is consumed in the domestic market, whereas 50% of the remaining half is used in industrialization process. While Argentina is a large producer of oranges and citrus products, it is unable to compete against Brazil due to the large industry capacity in Brazil. Hence, Argentina is targeting the juice industry as an alternative.

Production Regions & Export

Oranges are produced in two different regions of Argentina. The early seasons of oranges start from the Northwest region where the climate is warm. Oranges used in desserts, including the Valencias, are produced in the coastal areas.

Argentina exports around 140,000 to 190,000 tons of oranges every year. Their main markets are Europe, Russia and other Lain American nations. Argentina's competition are the producers in South Africa and the Southern hemisphere, making their prices more competitive when these producers are having down seasons.
