Pakistan is one of the largest producers of sesame seeds worldwide. Pakistan produces approximately 63,000 MT of sesame seeds annually and exports 40,000 MT to different countries worldwide. Its seeds contain 50-60 percent oil and 22 percent protein. Its oil is the semi-drying type and suitable for human health. The sesame seed is mostly used in confectionery items whereas, good quality oil is also used for medicinal purposes. In addition to raw food purposes, sesame seeds are used in different sweets and bakery products as well. Due to its fragrant smell, it is also an essential ingredient of soaps, perfumes, vegetable oil, and carbon paper. It is an ancient conventional oilseed crop. Pakistan’s sesame seed has a high worth in the international market.

Sesame seeds in Pakistan are grown in approximately 65 districts countrywide. Sesame is grown in all four provinces in Pakistan i.e Punjab, Sindh, NWFP, and Baluchistan. It is known as an oilseed crop and is cultivated in hot, dry climates and produces oil and protein-rich seeds. In all four provinces, the cultivation of sesame is done during June and July, which are the hottest months of the year. The harvesting is done when 75% capsules mature and turn yellow. It takes around four months for the sesame to mature so the harvesting season of sesame begins in November. It is cultivated on an area of 176 thousand acres approximately in Pakistan. Gujrat, Gujranwala, Attock, Bhakkar, and Faisalabad are among the major sesame producing regions in the country.
