The ideal soil and climate conditions and the supply of good-quality water in the southern part of Huelva (Andalucia, Spain) have led to a boom in strawberries cultivation turning Spain into the major producer of strawberries in Europe. Due to the increasing demand for other berries, such as blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries, Huelva has become the leading producer of these other crops, too. Encouraged by the light sandy soil and warm Spanish climate, berries can be grown high up on ridges. Huelva’s Mediterranean warm and temperate climate is ideal for its cultivation with over 3,000 hours of sunlight a year, which makes it, together with Almeria, the province with the highest rate of annual insolation on the Spanish Peninsula. The season goes from December until June. Strawberries are loved for its exquisite flavor, but, in addition to being delicious, they provide interesting health benefits, a remarkable amount of fiber, a source of vitamin B2, B3 and folic acid, as well as minerals such as potassium, magnesium and manganese. Strawberries are very low in sugar being 95% water.
