A small group of nearby fruit growers got together early in the winter of 1922 and agreed to establish a cooperative organization to pack and sell their goods. These sixteen founding members consented to execute contracts ensuring the delivery of their goods to this new warehouse and a note for $100 per acre of fruit-bearing land.
In April 1923, work on the warehouse officially started. Fruit was received using belt elevators, and a gas engine and generator were bought to power the "Ideal" sizer and provide lighting in the packing room. 58,000 boxes of fruit were delivered and packed in the first year of operation. It only took Cowiche Growers a year to realize that its facilities needed to be expanded to handle the company's rapid expansion.
