The third-largest producer of sugar in Uganda is Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL), which accounts for roughly 17% of the country's total output and produces an estimated 60,000 metric tonnes yearly. Uganda is the third-largest economy in the East African Community. Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan are among the countries that sell its sugar.

In 1900, at the age of thirteen, Nanji Kalidas Mehta left his native India and sailed to Eastern Africa, settling in Uganda close to the border with Kenya. By the year 2013, SCOUL was undergoing renovations and expansion to increase output to 100,000 metric tonnes annually.
