Tanzania is the Africa’s fourth leading sesame exporting country in the world behind Sudan, Niger and Ethiopia largest exporters according to the latest available data from the UN Food and agriculture organization FAO. Sesame is currently the main export-oriented oilseed crop in Southern parts of Tanzania and accounts for 35% of the total sesame exports in Tanzania. Tanzania has a great potential to make use of increasing world market demand for sesame to enlarge the production and export of sesame in the near future. Tanzania is also an important player in the world and the country has accounted for an average 2.5% of the total world’s sesame production over the past decade (FAOSTAT 2017). Among the top exporting countries Tanzania sesame had a better price than most of its competitors in Africa most likely due to minimum application of fertilizers and high oil content.
