Officially, a 200g loaf of bread now costs USD 0.25 (XAF 50) in Cameroon. This price, which comes from the 26.3% increase in wheat flour prices, represents a 20% increase in the household paying compared to the past. It is worth mentioning that the country imports more than 900,000 MT of wheat per year, and the bread that uses wheat flour as the main input is consumed by more than 30% of the population on a daily basis.

Even though the research has proven the possibility of replacing wheat flour with that of other crops like potatoes and plantains, very little has been done to improve the production of these items to replace wheat without dealing with a scarcity of these food crops. Therefore, the country will continue to face the wheat price hike and become an attractive market for wheat and other alternative flour suppliers.
