Catfish are a major freshwater fish in ASEAN countries, especially in Malaysia and Indonesia as well as Thailand. Wild catfish are available in most paddy fields in Malaysia but are also more readily available in peatlands. The Department of Agriculture has run a campaign using catfish as one of the ways in control of pesticides in the Integrated Pest Control (IPM) concept where tens of thousands of catfish are released into the fields in Malaysia.
