Considering the high potential of seafood production in South Sumatra province and its close proximity to the neighboring countries in the Southeast Asia region such as Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore, the government of Indonesia is currently building a major seafood market in the province. This new seafood market, which is currently under construction, is expected to be the new alternative hub to facilitate the trading and distribution of highly-demanded seafood products such as tuna, mackerel, squid, and shrimp. These products can be sourced from suppliers in around South Sumatera and then transported by sea to the aforementioned countries quickly as direct shipment would be available, which would cut down the delivery time and cost. This seafood market is projected to open by mid-2020.
