A number of local farmers in Lembang regency in West Java, Indonesia have succeeded in producing premium-quality strawberry to compete with the imported strawberries. Previously, the local demand for premium-quality strawberry has been primarily accommodated with the imported variety that was imported from Australia or the USA, that has been sold at a premium price as well (an average of IDR 300.000/Kg). This local variety of premium-quality strawberries has been in production since last year on a 10-hectare plantation land in West Java and is currently in the harvest season. This variety can now be marketed at a more competitive price of IDR 250.000/Kg, which is more competitive than its imported counterparts. In the short term, It is expected that the existence of this local variety of premium-quality strawberries can present an excellent alternative for the national consumers and minimize the dependence on imported strawberries in the long term.
