Bulgarian sheep and goat farmers have been against the importation of live lambs and frozen meat especially from North Macedonia where the live lamb prices are too low than the national Bulgarian lambs. Bulgarian retails chains were initially planning to import around 15,000 live lambs in the upcoming days, however, major retailers through the moderation of the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture have reached an agreement with Bulgarian Sheep and Goat Farmers Association to distribute and sell only Bulgarian grown and produced lamb meat. The decision came in an atmosphere where live lamb prices are around 2,10-2,25 €/kg in North Macedonia and 2,60-2,75 €/kg which prices more competitive than the domestic prices. On the other hand, the State Agriculture Fund has announced that it will support and subsidize lamb farmers through subsidizing slaughterhouses with up to 250 employees and the size of the subsidy will amount to 3,5 €/kg with condition that slaughterhouses purchase live lambs from Bulgarian farmers at the minimum price of 2,5 €/kg.
