World production of grapefruit is expected to increase by 3% to reach a record of 7 million tonnes thanks to favorable conditions as well as larger crops in China, South Africa, Northern African States, Turkey, and the United States.
Parallelly, the productivity of EU citrus farms has increased over the past nine years. However, the area has decreased. This drop is estimated at 13% for oranges and 8% for mandarins.
At the same time, a drop in the production of lemons and grapefruits is expected. The latter will be around 1.4 million tonnes (-12.6%) and 89,000 tonnes (-17.5%) respectively.
