As an effort to increase the production output of chicken eggs in Indonesia, several farmers are currently cooperating with the Ministry of Agriculture to develop an egg-laying chicken variety called Sembawa chicken. This chicken variety has been in development since 2018 and is now commonly farmed in the Northern part of Sumatra. What sets this variety apart from other varieties is that one chicken is capable of producing around 250 pieces of eggs per year, compared to other varieties that can only produce around 150 pieces of eggs annually. One challenge remains is the maintenance cost of this chicken variety: this chicken variety needs to be continuously fed with higher-quality chicken feed than conventional egg-laying chickens.
