Aside from the production of food and beverages, cassava in Indonesia is now also used for the production of bio-degradable plastic products. Plastic manufacturers have been using cassava as an ingredient to make consumer products such as plastic bags, straws, and glasses, that can be equally durable and practical to conventional plastic materials. So far in 2020, the industry is now capable of absorbing around 5% of the cassava produced nationally, which is an increase from its record in 2018 and 2019 at 2.5% and 3%, respectively. As the interest and awareness to be more environmentally friendly are growing rapidly, there is still a high possibility that the national plastic industry would need even more cassava as the demand for cassava-based plastic continues its rise.
