Local farmers in some regencies in West Kalimantan province such as Pontianak and Ketapang are currently trying to produce California Papaya variety. The seeds for this papaya variety were imported from Mexico earlier this year and these farmers began the early stage of the plantation process in early April 2020. California Papaya is not commonly produced in Indonesia yet, but the business prospect of this variety has attracted more and more farmers from this province to try producing it as this variety can yield bigger fruit sizes compared to the local varieties and it can also be harvested multiple times in a year. Moreover, the climate in the West Kalimantan is viewed to be suitable for this papaya variety as it requires a fair share of sunlight and an adequate supply of rainwater in order to grow optimally.
