In the second quarter of 2020, the Indonesian domestic market absorbed around 100 KMT of sea salt per month, an increase from 80 KMT per month in the first quarter of 2020. This is seen as a considerable growth for the national sea salt industry that faced fierce competition from the imported sea salt from India and Australia that dominated around 80% of the market share due to its higher quality and sodium level. The increased absorption of local salt by the domestic market was also aligned with the rule set by the Ministry of Trade of Indonesia to limit the volume of imported salt in the national market to around 2.5 MMT for the entirety of 2020, to encourage the national food manufacturers to find alternative sourcing channels from the national sea salt farmers.
