One of the major bottlenecks to the lower sales volume of the Ethiopian honey in the international market is the existence of the illegal border trade of honey in Ethiopia. Producers of honey, especially from the Amhara and Tigray regions, will take their products to the nearest Ethio-Sudan border and sell it to buyers from the other side. Since there is no tax paid to either government the price is much lower at the borders than the legal central market And this results in buyers preferring to buy at the border than the legal market in order to have a higher profit margin on the product. Recently the Ethiopian Government is taking necessary legal measures in order to stop the border trades and put responsible parties to justice.
