Aside from its use as an ingredient to make food and beverages, cottoni seaweed in Indonesia is now also allocated to the pharmaceutical industry as an ingredient to make cosmetic products such as shampoo and body lotion. This variety of seaweed is chosen because it is rich in pigment, antioxidant, and polyphenol content. Currently, the pharmaceutical industry can absorb around 20% of the total production of cottoni seaweed in Indonesia, which has now reached a level of 8 MMT in the period of January to June 2020. Moreover, this seaweed variety has also been exported overseas as cosmetics ingredients to the European countries such as France and Switzerland, with the export potential of 80 MT annually.
