Standard lupins contain a relatively high concentrations of alkaloids, which are bitter and have been reported to cause reduced nutrient digestibility for animals when used as feed. By today with the removal of alkaloids through genetic selection sweet lupins were created, which have a low alkaloid content and they contain non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) that can affect nutrient digestibility and feed passage through the gut.
