Japanese cucumber has become a new valuable commodity to produce for a number of farmer associations in East Java. Aside from the local cucumber variety, Japanese cucumber production has risen in recent years as it is suitable with the soil and weather condition in East Java and this variety is relatively easier to produce as it usually only takes an average of 40 days for the crop to be harvested, making it financially enticing for the farmers. The consistent supply also keeps the price of this commodity stable, as it is currently valued at IDR 2000 per kg at the retailer level, which is highly affordable for the local consumers. Moreover, this cucumber variety has also been exported to neighboring countries in the Southeast Asian region such as Singapore and Malaysia, with an average export volume of 25 MT/month.
