During the fresh table grape season in France, there is usually no pressure on the prices because when the market becomes saturated the two main varieties, Muscat and Lavallee, can be put in long term storage and sold gradually until Christmas or January. However, in 2022, due to the high production volume coupled with low demand, a lot more volumes are put into long term storage compared to previous seasons.
Many producers and cooperatives have to rent extra cold storage rooms to store their grapes. The large stored volume will put downward pressure on grape prices until January with prices expected to be lower compared to previous years. This is bad news for producers who are already facing high production costs in 2022.
