Generally, Britain grown strawberries can be found in the market from May to November, the rest of the season being covered by imports from Spain and Morocco. However, this pattern may change by winter 2023, if a trial led by Berry Gardens in partnership with Jones Food Company proves to be successful.
Jones Food Company is currently building the world’s largest vertical farm in Lydney, Gloucestershire, on an area about 13,750m2 . Eventually, the company would be able to supply around 70% of the UK’s strawberries within the next ten years, thus meeting the demand of the domestic market for local produce.
