Severe summer droughts in the Maritimes resulted in a surprise atop 2020 Canadian potato production as both Alberta and Manitoba surpassed Prince Edward Island in terms of production. According to Statistics Canada data, Manitoba produced 2.4 billion pounds of potatoes, followed by Alberta with 2.3 billion, and Prince Edward Island with 2.1 billion. Prince Edward Island planted significantly more acres of potatoes than the Prairie provinces, but yields were lower per acre due to drought and lack of irrigation.
