Portugal produces around 0.43% of the World's almond production, and the United States approximately 80%. In the 2020/2021 season, the domestic consumption of almonds amounted to about 1.56 million MT worldwide, representing an almost 45% increase compared to the domestic consumption in the 2013/2014 season.

The almond’s production areas in Portugal are increasing, and it is expected to grow from 32.000 MT in 2020, to an estimated production of 52.000 MT in 2030. A big challenge to the Portuguese production is that the almonds are a dryland cultivation, with an average production around 50% lower than US average production (kg per hectare).

The almond prices reached EUR 6 per kg in 2015, but in 2021, in Portugal, the prices fell to values between EUR 2.5 per kg and EUR 3.5 per kg. China and India's almond’s consumption are increasing, which seems to promise a bright future for this dry fruit, including for Portugal's production.
