Since Avocado is a tropical fruit, it can get very damaged by the night temperatures in Portugal, especially during the winter, because temperature drops by -2 degrees Celsius in December and January. Portuguese producers have been investing in different ways to prevent frost damage. For example, a big producer of Avocado in the South Region of Portugal who owns 160 ha of land has installed 5 giant fans that are connected to a sensor in the soil. When temperature at night reaches -1 degrees Celsius, the giant fan starts to produce hot air and spread it all over the avocados tree, to avoid the frost from hurting the roots of the trees. 2021’s harvest season in Portugal starts in Week 46 and lasts until February. Almost 90% of the Portuguese production is for export to Spain, where the maturity levels are adjusted in ripening rooms, and the avocado goes to the consumer almost ready to eat.
