Marine pollution from chemical waste disposal, destruction of mangrove forests, and the use of seabed-damaging fishing equipment in the waters off the northern peninsula of Malaysia has resulted in growing areas for clams every increasingly threatened and in decline. This not only affects the source of income for fishermen and supplies for consumers, but also causes the price to rise sharply in the market. The price of clams has risen more than 40% in the last 5 years reaching RM14 per kilogram or more since the low supply.
