Marine pollution from chemical waste disposal, destruction of mangrove forests, and the use of seabed-damaging fishing equipment in the waters off the northern peninsula of Malaysia has resulted in growing areas for clams every increasingly threatened and in decline. The price of clams has risen more than 40% in the last 5 years reaching RM14 per kilogram or more since the low supply.
