24th March is International Corn Day, which marks the importance that corn has in the agriculture world. Corn exports are concentrated in 4 countries: USA (25.7%), Argentina (16.8%), Brazil (15.8%) and Ukraine (13%). Around 60% of total corn consumption is used in animal feed (cattle, chicken, and pigs), and the other 40% are used in beverages, cosmetics, oils, among other products.

A peculiar product derivative from corn is ethanol. The European Union established a goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 55% until 2030, and the alternatives for fuels are biofuels. These biofuels are composed of ethanol extracted from corn, sugar, wheat, barley, and other products. The EU restricted ethanol imports from Brazil to protect European producers, mainly from sugar. Still, with the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war and the gap left by Ukraine corn, the future of biofuels seems to be threatened.
