Corn producers are worried about high prices and the additional pressure due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Since the start of the war, cereals like corn or wheat have risen by 35%, and it is expected that this year’s Ukraine production will stay well below expected, as producers might not get the needed productions materials. Ukraine is a major renowned corn supplier, and when it comes to Portugal, 40% comes from this country, around 800 000 MT, from its total imports.

A food crisis is already on the horizon, and the question is not whether it will happen but how big it will be. This conflict is far from being resolved, and most countries will raise barriers towards exportations as they will need to have their reserves and provide to their citizens first. It is desired that diplomacy finally kicks in, and may the resolution appears faster than expected.
