Every year in Costa Rica, a national minimum buying price is established for a 17kg carton of bananas. Compared to 2022, the minimum price for 2023 increased by 10% to USD 9.38, which also represents a subsequent increment of 7% from 2021 to 2022. Banana producers think the 10% increment for next year is not enough to cover the rising cost of materials they are experiencing as there is a 100% increase in the fertilizers and pesticide costs, which make up over 65% of the final cost of the goods.
