Some areas planted with MD2 pineapples are harvested for week 15, and export has been de-greened. Regarding the closure of the Davao port in Shanghai, the corporate grower is concerned that pineapple will be diverted to the local market during the holidays 14-17 April or left mature in the field without the chance of getting into the market.
The supply chain disruption contributed to the losses of some growers of fresh MD2 pineapples who are contracted with significant exporters. The sudden advisory caught everyone flat-footed, coupled with the onset of national holidays in the Philippines. The only remaining option is to harvest the fruits for processing into Juice or dried pineapples. The price is 40-50% lower than those for export.
Another alternative is to store the Fresh Pineapples and divert them to the nearest ports in China. Yet, the availability of empty reefer containers made it difficult for the traders to do so. The major players in fresh produce export from the Philippines with chartered reefer ships will have an advantage in this case.
