The cultivation of hemp will be controlled by the Ministry of Agriculture (DGAV).
In a press release, Minister Maria do Céu Antunes referred to the decision as a recognition of the interest and economic potential of the culture. Referring to the growing demand for hemp-based products, intended for industrial use, and also considering its high agricultural potential of the culture in the country, the Government approved an amendment to Regulatory Decree No. 61/94, of 12 October, which establishes rules regarding the control of the illicit market for narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, in order to define the responsibilities of official authorities that they must interfere in the processes of authorization and control of the cultivation of hemp for its industrial use, namely production of fiber, seeds and other products destined to the agro-industry.
Maria do Céu Antunes also emphasizes that this legislation safeguards the legitimate interest of this culture, by allowing to differentiate the cultivation intended for medicinal purposes and at the same time to avoid illicit activities, as the smuggling of psychotropic cultures.
It is recalled that the clarification and regulation of authorization for this activity is already taking place in several European Union countries that grow hemp on a large scale.
