India's popular Darjeeling tea production has declined to the lowest levels in recent years. In 2021 the production reduced to 6.5 million kg, almost 50% of the region's production capacity. Exporters and traders have been explaining this decline with various factors. The low wage for tea workers is seen as the primary factor. The closure of many tea gardens due to labor issues, changes in the region's climatic conditions, and loss in the export market combined with political disturbances have added to the fall in sales and production of the world-famous Darjeeling tea. Moreover, the exporters are seeing little or no efforts from the government to revive this industry in the region.

Assam tea producers are expected to benefit from this fall in production in the Darjeeling region. The domestic demands remain low due to the pandemic fear, but traders are hopeful of good trade by the second quarter of 2022.
