Germany which is already suffering from swine fever recently registered H5N8 strain on a farm in the eastern area of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte. A 10-kilometre observation area has been set up around the farm. More than 29,000 chickens have been slaughtered in the area and another 482 farms near the farm are on alert. Even thou the risk of the disease being transmitted to humans is considered low, previous outbreaks among poultry have needed extensive slaughter programs to be contained.
