Tomato Prices in South Africa Are at an All-Time High

Tomato prices in South Africa are at an all-time high of USD 0.51/kg (R8.91). Due to lower volumes reaching fresh produce markets and retail shelves, the price tag on tomatoes in week 29 of 2022 is almost double compared to the USD 0.28/kg (R4.48) during the same time last year. It is expected that the tomato price will remain elevated for the next two months. Although producers are receiving higher prices for their tomatoes at fresh produce markets, they are delivering harvests in much lower volumes.
