European importers were excited about the 2022 Kenyan Avocado season when news came that the government was implementing new approval policies for export to Europe. This approval policy includes government inspectors traveling to the farms at the beginning of the season and checking if the avocados meet specific standards and export grades. These measures come from Kenyan producers shipping avocados of inferior quality to the EU market for many years and, at this moment, nearly destroying their reputation. What seemed to be an excellent strategy to recover Kenya's reputation has failed execution. EU importers have been hearing stories from their suppliers in Kenya that government officials are backed up and unable to visit all the farms promptly. This is causing another set of issues for the suppliers and could potentially jeopardize quality. In other words, the verdict is still out if the newly implemented measures by the Kenyan government will enhance or impair the quality of avocados coming from Kenya this year,2022.
