Labour shortage for fruit pickers in New Zealand due to COVID-19

With a shortage of fruit pickers caused by border closures during the pandemic, New Zealand has heavily relied on recognized seasonal employees from the Pacific Islands. According to a supplier, fruits wort of millions of dollars will be potentially wasted if lack of workforce continues. Growers are now paying higher wages in order to obtain the labor needed. The current wage offer for fruit pickers is 20% higher than before the pandemic hit with further bonus incentives in place.
