Portugal reports a decrease of 45% of the water produced by the rain from October 2021 until the end of January 2022; January 2022 has been one of the driest of the last 20 years in Portugal. The lack of water has terrible consequences in some agriculture products, like Carob, which is mainly produced in the South of Portugal. The price of a carob in January 2022 is more than double of the value of 2021. It costs EUR 50 for 15kg in 2022 while it costs EUR 24 for 15kg in 2021, due to the lack of water that creates less production volume. Without water, the Carob can’t grow.

Another product affected by the lack of water is the oranges. The fruits are smaller and have less juice. To avoid the damages, the farmers are starting the irrigation of the orchards, but that will increase production costs. The lack of rain is beginning to worry the buyers of the big supermarkets, who can’t avoid these final effects prices.
