Since the Russian-Ukraine conflict, most the onion producers have gradually increased their prices, hoping to increase revenues and speculate rising cost of raw materials. This has led buyers to divert their interest to suppliers in Northern Europe (especially the Netherlands).
Two weeks before the beginning of the new season, there are huge amounts of product unsold that is being sold off at lower-than-average prices because growers want to vacate spaces in their warehouses before the new season starts. In order to give a concrete example of the lower-than-average prices please consider that before the war started, product discarded from commercial selection was sold at around EUR 0.20/kg (USD 0.21/kg) (mainly used for biomass) while now the unsold product is sold at an average of EUR 0.30/kg (USD 0.32/kg).
