The Kenyan mango season is expected to start in September and last until January 2023. The varieties available will be Ngowe and apple mango. In July 2022 the Kenyan government invested in an ultra-modern mango treatment plant at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to boost mango export volumes. The purpose of the facility is to manage the fruit fly menace which hampers exports and will open to the public for processing at the start of the 2022 season. This will increase the export volume following the self-imposed ban by the government not to ship to the EU market. The ban will be lifted due to an increase in the quality of exported mangos. The export volume for 2022-2023 is expected to be above 15 million tons. The apple mango variety traded at USD 4.5/kg FOB for a 4kg box during the 2021 season.
