The largest producing region of mate in Brazil, state of Rio Grande do Sul, is witnessing a sharp fall to 225 thousand tons this season, a 25% decrease compared to the year before. On the other, farmers are benefiting from a price uprise of 50%, driven by an incrase on demand. The coronavirus pandemic has changed the habit of sharing the 'chimarrão' gourd, popular among the gauchos people, which in turn are now consuming it individually and needing to buy more herb than before.
