Mussel processing plants are preparing for their last production run before they close down the production plants. The annual closedown occurs in August and lasts 3 to 6 weeks, and its length depends on many factors, including the mussel spawning period and the maintenance needed on the equipment. This year, the plant closure will last from August to the first week of September. After the closedown, prices for the season are released. Forecasts indicate the wholesale price of NZ Green Lip half-shell mussels will rise by 5-10% across all sizes this season.
